For me, it depends on the type of lingerie and the type(s) of tattoo. Are the two from the same era, or have the same theme? Some tattoos can be very sexy to me.
We've been in Paris for the last week, where the women are simply gorgeous, clothed and un-clothed. And not a tatoo in sight - thank god. Spent an entire morning in the lingerie dept of Printemps with Jane - mm-mm, the Europeans really appreciate tease.
Treacle, you said/wrote: "They're part of the look of the woman, and if she's satisfied with how she looks, everyone else be damned."
Naturally I agree! But I'm specifically speaking of the romantic elegant look of vintage lingerie; an artistic response to fashion as a costume sort-of-a-thing.
I myself have a tat. A 'typical tramp stamp' which I opted for because it was less likely to interfere with the lines &/or look of vintage lingerie. I think body art can be beautiful (mine certainly is! lol)
Now that I've more clearly articulated the question, any other thoughts?
I don't think tattoos and elegance or romance are at all oppositional. Romance and elegance come from the woman, and ,especially, from a confident woman.
I don't know...this feels like an invitation for men to judge women's bodies, rather than a affirmation for women to do what feels good to them...and that's what's bothering me.
But perhaps I'm missing something in all my youthful exuberance.
As a peripherally related aside, I'm thinking a getting a tattoo when I get back from Europe. Something in the art nouveau style of Mucha.
I totally agree with treacle and slipofagirl. I think this post here from a blogger associate of mine is apropos. To answer the question, I do not think it takes away from the lingerie, especially if the color(s) of the lingerie compliment the color(s) in the tattoo.

I'm not a big fan of tats on women at the best of times so I think they take away from the look.
sss
Tattoos ruin the look just like a modern thong showing under a vintage slip.
Tattoos are like graffiti.
The sophisticated veneer which western culture has acquired belies the primitive genetic inheritance which affects us all.

That's like asking if small nipples or stretch marks or a large rump ruin or add to the look of vintage lingerie.

I can look past her tat's. Check out her Ebay site and find out why.

Miss J is not much for tattoos, with or w/o lingerie.

Thanks for the clarification.
I suppose my simplest answer would be "No."

I think it completely depends on the outfit, the girl, and the tattoo. Sometimes it's great, sometimes, eh, not so much.
Without a doubt, they take away from the look.
