The Last OMG Vintage Lingerie Of The Year!

Notice the black satin ribbon that runs down the side of this black nylon half-slip by Vanity Fair -- ending in a bow right above the ruffles at the fabulous hem! The hem has a layer of sheer black chiffon over sheer pink chiffon that's embroidered with black flowers. Absolutely stunning vintage lingerie.

Winter White Wonderland

I didn't always hate Victoria's Secret (I'll be sharing more on that when I have some time away from kids and family who don't get into my blogging as much as I do lol), and this white chiffon peignoir set is an example of why I once loved VS: 100% nylon Val Mode Lingerie made for Victoria’s Secret.

Vintage Retro Rock

I received this email today, and it's such a worthy endeavor that I had to take a quick break from the kids and family stuff this week to share it:
Hello

I've started an online directory called VintageRetroRock.com for things Vintage, Retro & Rockabilly.

I started this website out of frustration in not being able to find vintage boutiques when I traveled, and stylists and makeup artists when I didn't want to do it myself. I was also tired of seeing my favorite boutiques go out of business because they didn't get the business they needed because the clientele wanted to keep them their little secret.

Now, so as to not leave out those outside the US & those with online boutiques, I've added a new feature on VRR that let's potential customers know what's new & what's on sale at these online stores.

Anyway, it definitely is still a work in progress and I add new resources daily, but I thought I'd reach out to you and network. If you know of salons, freelance artists, boutiques, photography studios, publications, clubs, etc that may be a good fit, I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Please check out the website, spread the word, and "Like" Vintage Retro Rock on FB.

Behind The Blogs: Talking With Lingerie Bloggers, Part Two

Continuing my talk with fellow lingerie bloggers, Ally of Guilty Pleasures and The Lingerie Addict, Treacle...

Over the years, I've had difficulties getting my lingerie blog accepted by and linked from directories, other blogs, lingerie companies, etc. over the years... I know that I'm rather frank about lingerie's role in and connections to sexuality than most, but have you had any troubles with your site in terms of acceptance or respect in the "internet fashion world"?

Treacle: Oh wow…you’re starting the tough questions!

Yes, yes, I have. And not just in the mainstream fashion and style world but within the lingerie world too Things have gotten much better in the last few months, but for my first two years of blogging, things were really tough. At best, lingerie boutiques, PR people, and designers flat out ignored me…at worst, they’d insult me. That was really hard to deal with, not to mention hurtful. There were some exceptions to that, of course; Catherine of Kiss Me Deadly, Pandora from Pandora’s Choice, and Vicki of La Magia have always been awesome. But for the most part, people acted like my blog didn’t matter.

But now I see that as a good thing because it taught me to not chase after press or look for acceptance from the industry, but to focus on making my readers happy. And that’s still my goal today…I work to make my readers happy first and view all the other stuff as icing on the cake.

Ally: I'm not sure whether the internet fashion world sees lingerie as fashion or as a remotely fashion related niche. So far, we had no troubles connecting and partnering with other fashion related websites, but I think lingerie has its own unique and diverse online world and most of the websites/blogs and people in the industry relate to each other in a different way than with the rest of the fashion community. It's not something that can be tagged as good or bad, but when you focus on general fashion it's no wonder that lingerie is not a major priority. On the other hand, with us - lingerie addicts - it's all about skivvies.

There are many metrics and ways of measuring "success" in terms of popularity on the Internet... However, the very definition of success is subjective. How do you define success for you and your blog? How do you measure it?

Ally: I agree with you, defining success is a matter of subjectivity. For us, it's mostly about the number of emails we receive from both loyal readers and new visitors who happen to stumble upon Guilty Pleasures for some reason and fall in love with us. It's about their understanding (for example we've received a couple dozen support emails while we've been struggling with a nasty hacking issue) and constant interest.

In a more visible and somehow more quantifiable way - it's about the number of great friends we have on twitter, about the Guilty Pleasures Facebook page that grows every day with the help of our amazing community, about the thousand daily subscribers and traffic coming from all over the world.

Treacle: Like you said, there are lots of ways of defining success, and the most appropriate definitions for you depend on your long term goals. One of my most important metrics is reader engagement…when people feel motivated enough to comment on a blog post or a Facebook status update or reply to a Tweet, I love that. I like that metric (as opposed to just using visitors or page views, which are also important) because it tells me how much I’m connecting with my readers, and making that connection with people is one of the reasons I started blogging in the first place.

I don't view the three of us as competition -- at least not in the usual way *wink* Gains in popularity for lingerie is a "win" for me, for everyone, I think!

What are your thoughts about "competing" and "comparing"? (About the three of us or any other lingerie sites.)

Treacle: Hmmm…well just speaking for myself here, I don’t view other lingerie bloggers as competition. I’ve never had a problem linking to other lingerie blogs, commenting on them, or telling my readers about them. Nobody knows all the answers to everything, and that’s true in lingerie just as it is in everything else. I do feel like if we compete, it’s in a more indirect way. Our readers only have so many minutes in their day to read blogs, so it’s important to make sure that your content is relevant and updated regularly so they want to visit yours. I guess all that’s to say I feel like the lingerie blogging community is very supportive. I count the ladies behind The Lingerie Post and Faire Frou Frou (for just two quick examples) as friends of mine, and I hope they feel the same way about me.

Ally: I think in our three cases - although we all share the common lingerie topic, hence one might say we are competitors, our online presence is quite different. You cover vintage lingerie a lot - and I'm the first to admit that if we are to compare at this level - than A Slip of a Girl is head and shoulders above any other lingerie blog. I mean where else can one find the most beautiful vintage parade of vintage slips, pinup panties and all the other fabulous finds you feature?

The Lingerie Addict is a fabulous one girl show where Treacle tells more of a biographic story of lingerie and stockings. It's a personal blog almost as much as a lingerie blog. As readers, we are allowed to get to know her better through her passion for lingerie. We get to find her findings, get to live her life as a lingerie addict through her own eyes and get to grow our lingerie passion alongside with hers. From this point of view, it's impossible to compare her with anyone else and it's impossible not to admire her.

Guilty Pleasures is more similar to a lingerie magazine. We have different editors from different corners of the world who write their own opinionated reviews, we have exclusive features and deals, so it's again a completely different way of showcasing lingerie.

There are many things to be said about compare and/or compete, but all in all, I believe that as long as lingerie is what you love, you'll find the right way to put it out there and there's enough room for everybody in this huge online lingerie universe.

One of the reasons I wanted to talk with the two of you specifically was that you're not retailers, shop owners, designers, etc., you are, like I am, blogging for the passion of it. In some ways I think that makes us more trusted by readers and consumers. Do you feel any sense of responsibility or pressure blogging?

Ally: Yes, I believe that we all have the responsibility of being honest with ourselves and our readers. There are items that you love and items that don't fit right or are over sold on certain websites. And you're obviously prone to toot the horn of the brands you love more than of others. As long as you're stating your personal likes clearly and as long as when you're asked for advice you try to be as impartial as possible, I don't see any problems or pressures in blogging about what you love.

Treacle: Definitely! My readers hold me to a high standard, and they have no problem calling me out on it when I slip up.

In my opinion, being an independent lingerie blogger is an asset because I’m able to keep a neutral and objective perspective. I’m not employed by (and therefore beholden) to any one brand or manufacturer, so I’m able to feature indie lingerie brands and small boutiques and give them national and international coverage that they may not have access to otherwise.

I also try really hard to be transparent and authentic with my readers. That affects everything from honesty in my product reviews to a recent example when a retailer wanted me to delete reader comments that they felt were negative about their store. I told them no because trust just isn’t something you trash like that. So yeah, there’s definitely pressure, the good kind of pressure, to maintain your integrity.

There's more to come, so stay tuned!

Behind The Blogs: Talking With Lingerie Bloggers

One of the down-sides of being so busy with "the business of blogging" is that you no longer get to keep up with many of your favorite blogs, so I thought it would be interesting to talk about lingerie and lingerie blogging with two of my favorite lingerie bloggers, Ally of Guilty Pleasures and The Lingerie Addict, Treacle.

Because we had so much fun dishing about what we do, the intimate apparel industry, etc., our conversation will be in a few parts; this is part one.

How long have you been blogging?

Treacle: Since April 2008, a little more than 2.5 years.

Ally: Three years.

Because I sometimes want to ramble on or post about something other than lingerie, I have a secondary blog. Is your lingerie blog your only blog?

Treacle: My lingerie blog is currently my only blog. I had a travel blog when I went to Europe in 2008, and I’ve toyed around with starting another blog (and may do so in 2011) but right now it’s all lingerie.

Ally: Yes, it's my only blog.

What inspired you to begin a site devoted to lingerie?

Ally: At its origin Guilty Pleasures wasn't just about lingerie. As the name suggests, it was about many things that we see as guilty pleasures. Beautiful lingerie is just one of those hidden little secrets that we are not supposed to enjoy, but deep within we still do. As time passed, we simply focused more and more on lingerie because our readers started to ask more and more questions about the industry, where to find specific items for certain occasions, how to get the right pieces for their body shape and so on. At the same time, we also realized that if we want to do this properly, we have to stick to just one major focus - and lingerie is the core that the GP team is built around in the first place.

So I guess that ultimately, we were inspired by our readers :)

Treacle: Two things. One was all the other lingerie blogs I was reading at the time. Not just A Slip of a Girl (which exposed me to so much about vintage lingerie) but also The Lingerie Post, Knickers Blog, Guilty Pleasures, and Faire Frou Frou. I was just getting interested in lingerie, and having blogs to visit definitely helped stoke the fires of my new passion.

The other thing that inspired was the profound absence of lingerie reviews and advice…especially for newbies. There was no shortage of press releases, pretty pictures, and sale info…but I had no idea what lingerie was worth the money, which pieces I needed for my emerging wardrobe, or even why lingerie was worth paying attention to and being interested in.

Did you have a mission when you started? A goal?

Treacle: The first name of my blog was “Stockings Addict,” and it was very, very nylon focused and very, very review-centric. If you go back to my first 20 or so posts in 2008, they consist primarily of hosiery reviews and pictures of stockings I wanted to buy. So my first mission was to be the best resource for stockings, tights, garter belts, and other legwear on the internet.

Gradually though, I got more and more interested in other kinds of lingerie, and I started writing about those too. I also began getting lots of e-mails from people wanting advice about what to buy and I started answering their questions on the blog. After awhile, it became really clear to everyone that I wasn’t Stockings Addict, I was the The Lingerie Addict, and so I changed my name in early 2010.

Ally: Actually, although the way we present our information has changed a bit, our initial aim is the same: to share the little things that make us happy with the rest of the world and raise awareness, educate and prove that beautiful lingerie doesn't have to be expensive and doesn't have to feel uncomfortable to make you look and feel amazing.

What was your biggest fear when you started?

Ally: I don't think that there was any fear when we started. Back then, there were just two girls teaming up to write about what they loved most. We never thought that Guilty Pleasures would turn out to be so grand. :)

It's harder now, as there are many people who come to us with their lingerie questions. Their trust is incredibly flattering but sometimes we don't know all the answers and our major challenge is to constantly offer relevant, reliable and entertaining information while still admitting what we don't know. For example, I'm not a professional bra fitter and although I know how to find the right bra for me and I know all the theory behind, in practice, I still recommend everybody else to go have a professional fit.

Treacle: Hmmm…my biggest fear was my friends and family finding out about the blog. I grew up very conservative, and I grew up in the South so talking about your knickers online just didn’t seem like the thing to “do.”

When I began, my biggest fear was that my ex would cause trouble, but being "Slip" has removed that... (knock wood) My greatest non-controllable fear was sounding stupid, no matter what I'd "say." I did it, I do it, and I'm over that now. *wink* Were your fears realized? If so, how did you handle it?

Ally: When we started, there were only two people that we had to answer to at the end of the day, now there are thousands. We listen to our readers and try to be as informative and helpful as possible while doing what we know best - writing about lingerie.

Treacle: Well I’ve recently told all my friends and family about my blogging activities, and they’ve been really supportive…especially my parents, who are just amused by the whole thing.

Now that you've been blogging awhile, have your goals or mission changed at all?

Treacle: Definitely. My goals and mission are continuously evolving, and I’m always thinking about ways to make The Lingerie Addict even better. Right now, I see my blog as the voice of the consumer in the lingerie industry, and as an expert resource for consumers. I also want my blog to be a platform to support and promote independent designers who don’t have the budgets for expensive marketing and advertising campaigns. And finally, I want to help spread the gospel of lingerie to “unbelievers”…that is, people who don’t think lingerie is important. Lingerie is the most important part of a woman’s wardrobe; without the right underpinnings, it really doesn’t matter how expensive the clothes you’re wearing on top are.

Ally: No. Guilty Pleasures has always been about helping women understand that lingerie is not just an undergarment. It makes you feel sexy and confident, it seduces as much as it empowers, it reveals as much as it hides. Ultimately, beautiful lingerie is part of being the best woman you can be.

And on that note, we'll take a pause *wink*
To Be Continued...

Taking Aim At Bad Lingerie Gift Giving Advice (A Rantie)

I've written a lot of lingerie gift buying guides to help men (especially this holiday season), and I didn't think I'd have to write any more, but...

When (yet another) Mike (from the U.S. -- I asked!) what I thought of a certain "How To" article, I was compelled to discuss it. Because it made me so spitting mad!

I don't want to even link to the article, but because I am ethical I will. Plus, I don't want to be accused of making stuff up -- some bozo already already made this stuff up and that's the problem!

Now if you visit the link (and I rather hope you don't -- or at least don't support the site or any of the sites lined to) you'll see that this article is obviously a bit of marketing spam designed to promote a lingerie wholesaler. I'm not against marketing &/or promotion; but I am against bad marketing and promotion.

In this case, I'm not worried about ineffective marketing for a company or line -- I'm peeved that some folks looking for help have been told a load of crap.

So let's get right to my rantie.

The crappy marketer writes:

It's better to give her something that's a tad too tight rather than giving her lingerie that's too loose.

Hell no! Lingerie, like most fashions, either fits or it doesn't. And, as any stylist will tell you, a bit looser is better than "a tad too tight."

If this bonehead is trying to get at the issue of being fearful of unintentionally insulting her fragile ego by giving her something too large, "he" didn't say that. And that fear is poppycock, anyway. We women know brands are sized differently, that men can be hopeless in terms of shopping, and we aren't so delicate that an inch or two one way or the other makes us think you hate us.

When it comes to sizing, we do want you to be realistic. Or be completely honest and admit that you don't have a clue when you ask for our help or when you are caught peeping at the tags on the items in our drawers. We, the gift receivers, want this as sincerely as "we" the sales clerks. Something the person who typed up this tripe mentions:
Size: When you go to a lingerie shop, the sales clerk would surely roll her eyes at you when you gesture "She's this big" or "this tall" when you're asked about the size. Standing amidst all that frilly stuff is already scary enough, so don't spend anymore time in there than you have to.
"Standing amidst all that frilly stuff" is scary?! *snort*

Listen, if you can't purchase lingerie without passing-out or pooping your pants, you probably aren't mature enough to have sex.

This frightened person also has this advice on determining your lady's lingerie sizes:

If you don't know her dress size, sneak into her underwear drawer and check on the label of the bra that she's wearing. Look for something that shows a number followed by a letter, like 34C or 36B. You probably already know her height, so the only thing that you need is the size of panties she wears which can come in the standard small, medium or large.
Dress size does not equal bra size; height has nothing to do with panty size; and there's nothing "standard" about any sizes, whether they be S,M,L etc. or numbered.

What

a pinhead.

How can this guy sell his wholesale lingerie if he doesn't even know that stuff?

Sadly, he continues...
Style & color: If you want to splurge, you can buy two types of lingerie - one that you think she will buy for herself, and one that you will enjoy.

Your male tastes and our female tastes are not necessarily mutually exclusive properties. This whole attitude is so horribly stereotypical that it insults both men and women.

But it gets worse.

Don't buy her something that you've seen the women in adult films wear - unless she has one of those things herself. Remember that the gift that you are buying is for her, not for you.

What does "one of those things" mean? An adult film? The sort of lingerie you'd find a woman wearing in one?

Honestly, dude, women enjoy adult films. We even admit it. And if your woman (who, by the way, I believe at this point is, if not purely an imaginary one, is as life-like as a sex doll) enjoys adult films, the lingerie featured in the films she likes is probably a really good clue as to the kind of lingerie she does like.

Taste is subjective, after all, so perhaps I should be nicer towards this guy in terms of what else he says about lingerie styles; but given what he's already written, I simply cannot.

After figuring out her size, make sure that the style of the lingerie that you will give as a gift will complement her body type. Get her something that will hide problem areas like her tummy or her thighs.
OK, had the rest of the article been at all sane, I could let this go with just a tiny wince while reading; but he's been completely insane and all this misinformation makes me so angry and sad that I have to comment. Or shout.

Just who has decided that her tummy or thighs are problem areas -- or that she has any problem areas at all?!

It's one thing to state this in terms of "if she's confessed unhappiness with" blah-blah-blah. But this just smacks of the whines of an immature male seeking some sort of perfection that doesn't exist.
As for the style, you can take your pick from bustiers, corsets, garter belts or bra and panty sets. Or, you can go for the sexier stuff like chemises, camisoles or baby doll gowns.
Um, I know I said style preferences were completely subjective, but are chemises really sexier than garter belts, bustiers and corsets? And the killer point -- the site he's hawking for really only sells bras! Sheesh. Way to talk your potential customer out of your own goods.

What

an idiot.
As for the color, black, white and red are the most popular options. You can also choose a color that will complement her skin tone or the color of her hair. Blondes, for example, will look great in pastel colors and black.

No other hair colors worthy of a mention. WTF.

And what is this ambiguous "black, white and red are the most popular options" business?

Those are the most offered lingerie colors, but does that really translate to help in finding what color your lady will love?

But then this "article" is anything but helpful.

Unless you are trying to take a number of men who are already concerned with how to appropriately give their lady lingerie and make their biggest nightmares come true.

The ladies who receive the lingerie too.

Everything's Coming Up Roses

You could even win this vintage nylon nightgown with roses (from the Myth line by Van Raalte) if you enter my contest!

Pine Cones & Contests For Christmas

Not to push my luck (because I won the last one!) but Ascending Butterfly has yet another cool contest! In this particular one, you can win a $100 gift card to Layla Grayce.

I know you might be thinking I'd be all about the bedding after my other post (I kinda dished about that over here with other contest info -- but if you really want to know, I adore Bella Notte's Embroidered Silk Velvet Curtain Panel with embroidery in Crimson) but this is a lingerie blog, so...

I was romanced by the sweet floral print on the Classic Ruffle Caroline Yellow pj's by Pine Cone Hill:

However the La Femme Stripe Chaise dress from Pine Cone Hill in 100% washable cotton voile is a such sweet feminine throw-back that I was leaning towards it:

But there was no XL for The Girls, so now I'm thinking about the Pine Cone Hill La Femme Linen Nightdress with delicate ruching. (Even if The Girls won't fit in there, I'd love to just display it in my collection!) I guess pine cones really are Christmasy!
